Firearms Owner Identification (F.O.I.D) Card Information

In case you don’t know what it is, a valid FOID card (Firearm Owner’s Identification Card) is something that is required by state law for all Illinois residents who buy or possess firearms or firearm ammunition.

There are a couple different ways to obtain a FOID card application. First, you can pick up an application form at any law enforcement agency (Vernon Hills included) or firearm’s dealer. You can also download the application directly from the Illinois State Police web site. The form, along with the $10.00 fee and a photo, is then mailed directly to the Illinois State Police.

Application forms can be picked up at the Vernon Hills Police Department Records Section on Monday - Friday, normally between 8 a.m. - 9 p.m. (After 4 p.m., it might be best to call first, 847-362-4449.) Click here to read more about FOID cards and to download an application form.

Don’t forget, although you do not need a license to own a firearm in Vernon Hills, there is a local firearms trigger ordinance that you need to be aware of and comply with.
