BASSET

Training Program

B.A.S.S.E.T. is Beverage Alcohol Sellers and Servers Education and Training. B.A.S.S.E.T. is a mandatory four (4) hour (minimum) training course that must be attended by anyone who sells and/or serves alcohol in a Vernon Hills liquor establishment, such as waitresses, waiters, bartenders, and over-the-counter clerks. The management of these establishments must also receive B.A.S.S.E.T. certification.

The statewide B.A.S.S.E.T. program is overseen by the Illinois Liquor Control Commission. Basically, B.A.S.S.E.T. is an education and training tool for servers and sellers of alcohol. Topics of discussion include:

  • Effects of alcohol
  • Blood alcohol content (BAC) system
  • DUI
  • Responsible serving of alcohol
  • Checking of IDs
  • Alcoholism
  • Village ordinances
  • Refusing or discontinuing liquor service

When Must the Course Be Taken?

Once you are hired, you must sign-up for a course from one of the below providers prior to serving/selling alcohol. The course must be completed within 90 days from the date you were hired. During that time, you must be working under the direct supervision of a person who is B.A.S.S.E.T. certified. The Vernon Hills Police Department performs quarterly checks at each establishment that serves or sells alcohol. If you are caught selling or serving alcohol outside these parameters, both your employer and you may be punished. Please take this course as soon as possible.

The Village of Vernon Hills accepts B.A.S.S.E.T. training from any licensed Illinois B.A.S.S.E.T. provider.

In recent years only the following providers were acceptable. Sellers and servers of alcohol in Vernon Hills establishments are encouraged to continue to use the providers as needs require.:

Information on other Illinois licensed providers/classes can be found at the Illinois Liquor Control Commission website.

Law Change Regarding Certification Expiration

Effective 7/1/15, Illinois law requires that all BASSET certifications need to be renewed every 3 years. Any server/seller that received certification after 7/1/12 will need to be recertified three years from the date the training was completed. Unfortunately, the law does not allow for an abbreviated renewal class. Thus, servers/sellers who require BASSET recertification will need to attend a regularly scheduled BASSET class from one of the above providers.

NOTE REGARDING DEADLINE (posted 11/9/15):
In Lake County, the recertification will be required by 7/1/16. Thus, anyone who received certification prior to 7/1/13 will need to be recertified by 7/1/16. However, this DOES NOT eliminate the requirement for new employees as outlined above.

Should there be any changes to the State law we will notify the establishments and post the information here.
