Shopping for Electricity in Illinois

As an Illinois electricity consumer, you have the power to choose who provides the supply portion of your electric service for your home. Electric supply may be sold be either your local utility at prices approved by the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) or you can sign up with a competitive retail electric supplier. For Vernon Hills residents, Com Ed will remain the provider for delivery of electricity. This means Com Ed is the utility company that will maintain lines, poles, and meter servicing in our area – no matter which energy supplier you choose. Attached our links regarding Customer Choice, energy supply options, bill estimator tools, and usage data. A link with certified, supplier options is also attached.

We suggest the following precautions be taken when dealing with energy solicitations:

Never provide social security or personal information to anyone initiating contact with you claiming to be a utility representative or requesting you to send money to another person or entity other than your local utility providers.

Always ask to see a company photo ID before allowing any utility worker into your home or business.

When in doubt, check it out. Be skeptical of individuals wearing clothing with old or defaced company logos. If you have any doubts, ask to see a company photo ID.

Never make payment for services to anyone coming to the door.

Never allow them to look at your current electric bill.  They may be able to use your account number to change your service provider without you knowledge.

The Village of Vernon Hills requires all solicitors must have a license.  If they can not provide you their license, contact the Vernon Hills Police Department at 847-362-4449.

If customers have concerns about the status of their account, they can also contact their local utility providers:
