Honoring Those Who Serve

The Village expresses gratitude for all who have served and continue to serve to protect our freedom. In fact, the month of May includes several significant dates, including Memorial Day, May 30.

Dates of Note

Please join in learning about these dates and honoring those who have protected our freedoms in the past, and continue to do so now:

  • VE Day (Victory in Europe Day) – May 8:
This day commemorates the day that World War II was officially over in Europe. On May 8, 1945, the Allies formally accepted Nazi Germany's surrender. (VJ Day commemorates August 15, 1945, marking the end of war with Japan.) Resource: US Dept. of Defense VE Day webpage
  • Armed Forces Day – May 21:
The third Saturday in May marks the day we formally honor those currently serving in the military. The day was created on August 31, 1949 to combine the previously separate days of Amry, Navy and Air Force days. Resource: Armed Forces Day History webpage
