Planning & Zoning (P&Z) Commission Members Needed

The Village of Vernon Hills is seeking applicants for two openings on the Village’s Planning & Zoning Commission.  The Commission reviews new developments, including residential subdivisions and commercial projects, as well as special use permits and zoning variation requests.   The Commission also makes recommendations regarding updates to the zoning code, sign regulations, and the Village’s Comprehensive Plan.

A typical Commission meeting may involve a public hearing to consider plans for a new restaurant.   The business will present its plans and the Commission will discuss potential impacts on the area, and review the layout of the property, the appearance of the building, the landscaping, and the lighting.

The ideal candidate would be dedicated to the idea of helping our community to continue its trajectory of high quality and sustainable growth, consistently improving access to our parks, shopping areas, employment centers, and neighborhoods.  Experience in planning, architecture, law, finance, engineering, or construction management is desired, but not necessary.   Residency in the Village of Vernon Hills is required.

The Commission meets on Wednesday evenings 1-2 times per month, and Commissioners spend roughly 1-2 hours reading Staff reports to prepare for each meeting.  A small stipend is provided for each meeting attended.

Members of the Planning & Zoning Commission are appointed by the Village President with the advice and consent of the Board of Trustees.  Residents interested in being considered for appointment to the Commission should email Andrew Jennings, Community Development Director, at  Please include a résumé and a brief introduction addressing the following: (1) how long you have lived in Vernon Hills; (2) why you are interested in an appointment to the Commission; (3) describe any professional or personal experience that you believe would be an asset to the Commission; and (4) confirm that you would be able to commit adequate time to prepare for and attend up to 2 evening meetings each month.  Applicants should submit the above materials for consideration by no later than Friday, November 25th.
