Extremely hot weather requires us to be particularly mindful. Take breaks, drink water (and carry some with you), check on neighbors and relatives, and be on the lookout for symptoms of heat exhaustion in yourself and in others around you. Remember to check your vehicles – never leave a child, a pet, or anyone who cannot adequately care for themselves in a parked car for even a minute!
- During extreme heat, Hawthorn Mall is available as a cooling center during their regular hours of operation – 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. (Monday through Saturday) or 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. (Sunday).
- Lake County arranges for Cooling Centers around the county. They suggest reaching out before visiting a center to ensure that it is operational. View the Lake County Cooling Centers map.
- If you are in need of immediate assistance, dial 911.
- If you are looking for general assistance that is of a less time-sensitive nature, look to 211 Lake County (211LakeCounty.org; or text your zip code to 898211).
- Please remember to take extra care with regard to vehicles – make sure that children and pets are not left in vehicles, even for a few minutes. Cars heat up extremely quickly and to extreme temperatures with astonishing speed. Double check your back seats and do not leave anyone in your vehicle, especially during this heat wave.
- Extreme heat also tends to bring storms. Stay alert and be prepared. More information is available on the Be Severe Weather Ready web post.
