Pedestrian and Bike Courtesy
We understand that in the interest of safety and practicality, riding on the sidewalk is best
. However, if you do, please be attentive and courteous to pedestrians who are also on it.
In fact, the Illinois Bicycle Rules of the Road state "When walking or riding your bicycle on a sidewalk or on and along a crosswalk, you must yield the right-of-way to pedestrians and give an audible signal before overtaking and passing them. You must operate as a pedestrian. Watch for signs that prohibit riding bicycles on sidewalks and crosswalks."
Sometimes a nice loud "On your left" or "On your right", is a nice polite way to let pedestrians know that a bike is approaching. As always, thanks for helping to keep everyone safe.
