Veterans Day 2023 is commemorated on Saturday, November 11. Because this date is on Saturday, federal offices will observe the holiday on Friday, November 10, with many offices closed that day. (Note that Village offices are open on Friday, November 10.)
Veterans Day is a time to honor those who have served our nation through any of the military branches. The holiday was originally called Armistice Day, and marked the anniversary of the the official end of World War I. In 1954, the name was changed to Veterans Day to honor all veterans of all U.S. wars.
A tradition of Veterans Day is to observe a two-minute moment of silence at the time when World War 1 fighting ended – the 11th day of the 11th month at the 11th hour in 1918. For those who observe that time, in our time zone it will be at 1:11 p.m. on Saturday, November 11.
The Village of Vernon Hills joins in saluting all who have served our nation. Thank you for your service.
